Leopard Gecko
Skin Eating Behavior
Under normal
conditions a Leopard
gecko will shed in one large piece. It might be strange to
notice that although you saw the start of the shedding process,
there are sometimes no skin lying in the cage? This is due to Leopard gecko skin
eating behavior also called ceratophagia). Weather it is an evolutionally adaptation to
"recycle" nutrients, to serve as protective mechanism to prevent
predators from finding them in their habitat or simply to ease
the process is unknown. What is certain is that when a Leopard
gecko is eating its skin it is a fascinating, sometimes not so
commonly seen behavior of these secretive animals.
Leopard gecko skin
regurgitation on the other hand is sometimes an indication of a
sick gecko.
