Leopard Gecko Supplements
Leopard gecko supplementation is the
addition of additional nutrients (Leopard gecko supplements)
like amino acids, vitamins and minerals to a diet (which is, or
is suspected to be deficient in these components) to improve the
overall value of the diet. Supplementation is either done
separately or in combination of
Leopard gecko dusting
and Leopard gecko
gut loading.
Leopard geckos in captivity are not exposed to various well
balanced insects as they are in nature. We tend to feed them
only a very small variety of insects, of which most are not
nutritionally balanced with regards to vitamins and minerals.
This is why we need to supplement or add additional micro
elements to their diet.
The most important Leopard gecko supplement is calcium. Make
sure that the calcium source you're using is specifically
intended to reptiles and that it contains additional vitamin D3
(which helps with the absorption of calcium from the gut).
Leopard
Gecko Supplementation
Leopard gecko insects such as
crickets,
Dubia roaches
and other feeder cockroaches should always be
gut loaded with an
appropriate mineral / vitamin supplement and should be
dusted
two to three times a week with a Leopard gecko calcium / vitamin
D3 combination powder. Insect gut loading should take place at
least 24 to 48 hours prior to feeding.
Mealworms,
waxworms and
Phoenix worms should
also be dusted with a powdered Leopard gecko calcium source
prior to feeding. Crawling foodstuffs can be offered in a shallow escape
proof dish containing powdered calcium to stimulate in intake of
this mineral. Mealworms, waxworms and nestling mice are also a
good source for fat and fatty acids.
Leopard Gecko Calcium Supplement
An ad lib supply of powdered
Leopard gecko calcium / vitamin D3 supplement should be supplied
in a small dish or lid for extra calcium needs.
