Leopard Gecko Waxworms
Waxworms are the larvae of one of the two related wax moth
species, the Lesser moth (Achroia grisella) or the Greater wax
moth (Galleria mellonella). The are apparently natural pests of
bee hives used for honey production.
Leopard
Gecko Waxworm Feeding
Both these species
are very tasty to Leopard geckos, but also very high in fat
content (ca. 20 - 22% fat and 16% protein). Because of their
fat tails, Leopard geckos can consume relatively large
quantities of these worms without any harm. This however still
means that the diet should be balanced with more nutritious
foodstuff such as crickets and
cockroaches.
Leopard gecko waxworms
have a poor calcium to phosphorus ratio (1:7) and should be offered in a
shallow escape proof dish with a suitable calcium
supplementation to stimulate its intake. Waxworms
only get to about 2.5 cm / 1 " in length. The earlier larval
stages are perfect for baby Leopard
geckos.
