• Insist on buying only healthy Leopard geckos

• Always choose the biggest & strongest Leopard gecko baby from the batch

• Make sure to look at the parents of a new-born to get an idea of what the offspring will look like, especially with certain colour and patter morphs

• Only buy from reputable pet shops & breeders with acceptable Leopard gecko keeping & breeding conditions

• Only buy Leopard geckos which were captive bred in your own country & that were not illegally imported or caught from the wild

• Ask about & prevent the possibility of inbreeding

• Insist on buying baby Leopard geckos that are older than six weeks

• Insist on visual inspection before buying a Leopard gecko (important consideration before buying over the internet)

• Insist on seeing a baby Leopard gecko eat one or two crickets

Theoretically Leopard geckos are ready to be sold when they start to eat. This can be as early as three days after birth. Even if this is so, insist on buying juvenile geckos instead of babies. Older geckos tend to give less Leopard gecko eating problems compared to babies.

When buying a new Leopard gecko, ask what the incubation temperature was. This will give you a rough idea of the more likely gender of the gecko. Visual Leopard gecko sexing via external gender determination is only possible from the age of puberty, which is variable.

What To Look For In Baby Leopard Geckos For Sale

Remember that a new pet Leopard gecko comes with a lot of responsibility and hidden costs. It must be noted beforehand that geckos are prone to various medical problems which can lead to veterinary expenses. Even healthy Leopard geckos need regular routine veterinary visits which must also be budgeted for.

A healthy Leopard gecko for sale should always be alert, mostly willing to eat moving crickets when it is scavenging for food. They should also be without any mouth, nose and cloacal secretions. Geckos should be free of mites and in good overall body condition, i.e. a fat tail and no bones protruding at the tail base and rib areas and have a well filled out belly.

Sick Leopard Geckos For Sale

It is not advised to buy a sick Leopard gecko simply because you feel sorry for it. Apart from buying a lot of potential problems (and a possible dead Leopard gecko), one also support the sale and resale of poor quality live animals. Remember that most pet shops and poor breeders have a no-return policy!
