A disease is defined as an abnormal condition or unhealthy
condition, usually caused by a disease process. With a disease
you expect to see a sick
Leopard gecko, and is usually associate with clinical
signs.
Leopard Gecko Disease Process
Leopard gecko diseases are usually caused by some or other
organism causing some degree of damage, i.e. parasites, bacteria
and viruses. Other common disease processes
in Leopard geckos can also be caused by deficiencies and
poisonings.
Common Leopard Gecko Diseases
Not all animals get the same diseases. Some diseases can be seen
in a variety of species, but differs with regards to their
severity or frequency. Some diseases might look exactly the
same, but they are caused by different disease processes.

When you suspect that there is something wrong with your
Leopard gecko,
make an appointment with the nearest
Leopard gecko friendly
vet. Never attempt to treat these animals yourself and do
not waste time by hoping it will get better. Reptile
veterinarians are trained, or have experience with Leopard gecko diseases. Remember to accommodate the vet with a fresh
stool sample sealed in a ziplock plastic bag.
Additional tests such as faecal flotation and faecal wet
preparation with be done in most veterinary visits. Other, more
expensive tests might also include radiography and
ultrasonography. Leopard gecko disease treatment might include
a combination of parenteral fluids (drips), antiparasitics and
antibiotics. |
